What is Claude Duet? A plain-English guide for small business owners

Claude Duet is Anthropic's new proactive AI agent for small business owners. What it does, who can join the waitlist, what it costs and its limits.

Key takeaways

  • Claude Duet is a separate Anthropic app (iOS, Android and claude.ai) where Claude works as an always-on agent that messages you first.
  • It is a waitlist-only research preview for US Claude Pro and Max subscribers; Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet.
  • There is no extra charge during the preview, but its background checks use your normal Claude usage limits.
  • It asks before it sends a message, pays, signs or deletes anything, and some actions (trading securities, moving money between accounts) are blocked outright.
  • Best early uses for a small business: a morning brief, unpaid-invoice reminders, payroll prep and contract paperwork, all with you approving the final step.

Claude Duet is Anthropic's new AI agent app, and it is aimed squarely at people who run small businesses. Announced on October 21, 2026, it is a separate app in which Claude works in the background, sends you a short brief each morning, and checks with you before it acts. Anthropic says it built Claude Duet "for professionals and small business owners with more on their plates than they can track" (Anthropic). Below is what it does, who can get it today, what it costs, and how to decide whether it is worth joining the waitlist.

The Hacker News thread passed 500 points within a day, and The Verge framed it as Anthropic's answer to Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots (The Verge). If you are comparing those three, read our Claude Duet vs Muse vs OpenAI Dots comparison.

What Claude Duet actually does

The regular Claude app waits for you to open a chat. Claude Duet works the other way round: it comes to you. According to the product page, it briefs you every morning, drafts next steps, and then stays quiet until something needs your attention.

A morning brief and check-ins through the day

Each morning it looks across your email and calendar, picks what most needs you, and can start first steps such as drafting replies for you to review (Claude Help Center). It does not watch your accounts nonstop. Anthropic says it checks connected accounts "every few hours" because constant checking would burn through plan limits much faster (Anthropic). That means something urgent can land between checks, which the help center states plainly.

Bigger jobs that run while you are away

Claude Duet has its own virtual machine with its own browser, so your laptop or phone does not need to stay on. You describe a task in a message, it works out which apps to use, and you get a notification when the job is done or needs your review. Anthropic lists examples ranging from scheduling meetings to building dashboards, financial or sales forecasts, prototypes and web apps (Anthropic). Finished files show up in a "Make" tab, and a "Tasks" tab tracks what is in progress (Claude Help Center).

It uses the Claude setup you already have

Your memory, skills and connected apps from your Claude account carry over, so setup is light. Anthropic says Duet can use the more than 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace. The business examples it gives include finding missed Gmail and Slack messages, checking QuickBooks or Stripe for unpaid invoices and drafting reminders, preparing payroll in Gusto, sending agreements through Docusign, drafting follow-ups from HubSpot deal history and managing a Shopify store (Anthropic).

Who can get Claude Duet, and what it costs

How to join the waitlist

Go to the Claude Duet product page, choose "Join the waitlist", and enter the same email address as your Claude account. Access is tied to that address, and a mismatch with your phone's Apple or Google account is one of the listed reasons people do not get in. When your invite arrives, open it on your phone and follow the setup steps (Claude Help Center).

Safety: what it will and will not do on its own

Claude Duet reads, drafts and prepares work by itself. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows you exactly what it is about to do and waits for approval. A few actions are off-limits even if you approve them, such as trading securities or moving money between accounts (Anthropic).

Anthropic also describes a new classifier that checks each message and is designed to refuse to share the most sensitive information, such as credit card numbers and government ID (Anthropic). For purchases it can use Stripe's Link or Shopify's Shop Pay, and each purchase uses a one-time card (Claude Help Center).

The help center is honest about prompt injection, meaning hidden instructions in emails or web pages that try to steer the agent. Duet is built to treat what it reads as information, "but no defense is perfect", which is one reason important actions need your sign-off. We explain this risk in how hidden prompts in emails can trick AI inbox agents.

Known limits in the research preview

Anthropic calls this an early version that "still might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent", and says personal errands like booking tickets are not as strong yet (Anthropic). The help center adds that you cannot pick the model (it runs on Claude Opus 5.5), cannot watch or take over its browser, it does not make phone calls or send texts to other people, Slack works with limits, and Microsoft 365 is not available yet (Claude Help Center).

We have not tested Claude Duet ourselves. Everything above comes from Anthropic's own pages and early reporting, so treat it as a description of what the product is designed to do, not a review.

What this means for small businesses

Claude Duet is the first of the big always-on agents to be pitched directly at small business owners rather than at consumers or large companies. That is useful, but it also means a lot of your business data will flow through one tool. A sensible way to start:

  1. Pick one boring, recurring job first. Unpaid invoices are a good test: Duet can check Stripe or QuickBooks and draft reminders, and you approve each email before it goes out. Our free AI time savings calculator can help you rank which job to hand off first.
  2. Connect only what that job needs. You start every connection yourself and can disconnect any app. Note that disconnecting stops future access, but memory of past information is kept (Claude Help Center).
  3. Read every approval card. The approval step is the main safety net. If a draft mentions changed bank details or an urgent payment, check the original email yourself.
  4. Watch your usage meter for the first week. Background checks count against your limits, so a heavy week of tasks could slow your regular Claude work.
  5. Write clear task briefs. Agents do better with a clear goal, inputs and a "done" definition. Our free prompt grader scores a brief before you send it.

If you are outside the US, or on a Team plan, you cannot use Duet yet. The prompts in the box below work in the regular Claude app, ChatGPT or Gemini today.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Duet free?

There is no extra charge during the research preview, but you need a paid Claude Pro or Max plan, and Duet uses that plan's usage limits (Claude Help Center).

Is Claude Duet available in Canada?

Not yet. During the research preview it is available only to Pro and Max users with a Claude account in the US. Anthropic has not published a date for other countries.

How is Claude Duet different from the normal Claude app?

The Claude app waits for you to start a chat. Claude Duet comes to you with a morning brief, works on tasks in the background on its own cloud computer, and messages you when something is done or needs approval (Claude Duet product page).

Can Claude Duet pay bills or move money?

It can make purchases you approve through Link or Shop Pay using a one-time card. Moving money between accounts and trading securities are blocked even with your approval (Anthropic).

Does Claude Duet work with Microsoft 365?

Not yet. The help center says Microsoft 365 isn't available in Duet during the preview, and some connectors such as Slack work with limits.
