Mystery-shop your own phone line: have an AI agent call your business at lunchtime and after hours like a customer would, then score what callers actually hear: AI agent prompt

Most owners never hear what a customer gets when they ring at lunchtime, after hours or on a busy Saturday: unanswered calls, a full voicemail box, an outdated greeting or a rushed answer. On Oct 26, 2026 a builder posted on X that, now that his Grok Bot can make phone calls, he built a bot that finds out what small business customers hear when they call at lunchtime. The prompt below sets up the same check on your own business with any AI agent that can place calls, or as a script for a friend to follow, and turns the results into a short fix list.

The prompt

Help me mystery-shop my own business's phone line. Business: [name, type, number to call, opening hours]. What a good call should include: [e.g. answered within 4 rings, greeting with business name, hours, price range for our main service, how to book]. 1) Plan 5 test calls at different times: lunchtime, just before closing, after hours, a busy weekend slot and a quiet mid-morning. 2) For each, write a short realistic caller script with one common question (e.g. 'Do you have anything available this week?', 'How much is [service]?'). The caller must say it's an AI calling on behalf of the business owner if asked, and must not book, pay for or agree to anything. 3) After each call, record: time, rings before answer, answered by a person / voicemail / no answer, greeting used, whether the question was answered, hold time, tone, and whether a voicemail was returned and how fast. 4) Summarise across all calls: the 3 biggest problems, what each is likely costing in missed customers, and a simple fix for each (e.g. new voicemail greeting text, call forwarding at lunch, an answering service or AI receptionist, a FAQ sheet by the phone). Only call my own business's number.
